THE PEAK DISTRICT

Exploration of the White & Dark Peak District National Parks

The Peak District is the closet National Park to where I live, not exactly on the doorstep, but close enough to not warrant considerable planning. For me the Peak District is the most accessible of the National Parks to visit. It does not have the rugged appeal of the mountains of Wales & Scotland and its highest peak (Kinder Scout) reaches 663 Metres. The Peak District does have a sense mythical beauty and has a large number of Iron and Bronze Age monuments scattered throughout the landscape. These coupled with vast cave complexes provide interest to all.

Mam Tor – I visited Mam Tor (Mother Hill) on a late afternoon in May. It is an easy 15 minute walk from the National Trust carpark. As you can see the view from the Peak is fantastic, however, its accessibility invites a lot of visitors at Sunset. Although most embrace the silence and enjoy the sunset there is an element of drinkers and party goers that spoil this place. On my visit I had to remove litter including many beer bottles. I probably would not visit again until Winter.
